Palast
Hohenems (Website)
This palace with an arcaded courtyard was build 1561. It is still inhabited by a
family which descended from Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife Elisabeth. In this palace
some parts of the Nibelungenlied where found.
Schattenburg (Website)
This place is one of the best remained Austrian fortresses. Some parts are dated
from before 1200. One speciality is the fountain which consists of four drill holes.
Ruine Altems
This ruin was build is from the 9th century.
Schloss Gayenhofen
This castle was build in the 13th century. Bludenz itself offers a town gate
from 1416.
Schloss Glopper
The castle was build in 1343 and is still inhabited.
Mittelweiherburg
Though Vorarlberg is in the middle of the Alps it offers a castle in the middle of a
pond (weiher = pond). It was build in the 16th century and offers a small museum of local
history.
Ruine Neumontfort
This ruin is dated from the 14th century and offers an interesting
"Burgfried". The burgfried was always the strongest tower in a fortress and was
the last resort for the garrison and the citizen. Next to Neumontfort there is an
informative forest teaching path.
Burgkirche
Rankweil
Sometimes people build churches like fortresses. One of this special type you can find
in Rankweil. It is located on top of a rock right in the middle of the town. The place was
mentioned in the year 830 the first time and was probably a mansion house of the
Merowinger during their period.
