What I have learned by this trip
The journey is over. I have reached the entrance hall of my town's railway
station. So what did I learn by this special trip in December?
Some thoughts about dining-cars
Is it worth to take care about which dining car is on your planned train?
Well, I think so ...
Lets speak about water towers
While travelling by train I often think about typical elements of landscape
and architecture one can see through the train window.
Working on trains
One reason for me to travel by train is the chance to
work while travelling. Of course this is just a saying if you don't choose
your train wisely.
Some tips for your personal InterRail trip
After using an InterRail pass for many days it is time to
sum up what tips I could put down for using such a great offer.
Catching the moment on a train ride
I love train trips. I love to watch the landscape and to discover tiny
details. And I love to take photos. Well, I am not sure about the last
one...
Train travels shaped like a star
Travelling a country by train is much fun. There is only one problem: What
to do with your luggage while walking along a shopping street or visiting a
museum?
Museums near railway stations
As I love to travel by train and to visit museums as well it is no question
that a museum next to a railway station would make my day.
Strolling around a railway station
Well, why should we stay at a railway station and its
surrounding for a longer time? Its because of the history!
About my
InterRail trip
In fall 2011 I got an invitation by
Eurail.com to travel Europe by an InterRail
global pass and to blog about it. Read more about this trip here.
Wiesberg Castle
Photo of Wiesberg Castle taken during a train ride. The castle is
situated next to the famous Trisanna railway bridge which got famous in
1964. The bridge was
replaced by a newer one within a few hours.
Nativity Scence in Graz
Every year a
Christmas crèche carved in ice is shown in one of the
most fascinating places of Graz, the Renaissance court
Landhaushof.
Outside the Roman walls
of Ljubljana
The Roman walls of Emona (The Roman name of Ljubljana) were
reconstructed by the Slovenian architect
Jože Plečnik. Looking at this gate make me think it was
reconstructed with a good portion of creativity?
Behind the Roman
walls of Ljubljana
During a walk along the reconstructed Roman walls in Mirje I enjoyed
this marvellous autumn scenery. The walls were reconstructed by the
famous Slovenian architect
Jože Plečnik in the first half of 20th century.
Decommissioned 3rd
class carriage
During a walk on the grounds of the
Railway Museum of Slovenian Railways I came across a lot of
decommissioned locomotives and carriages.
Stained glass
window at Ljubljana Railway Station
Entering the ticket hall of Ljubljana Railway Station I was especially
impressed by these stained glass windows. The photo reminds more of a
chapel than a ticket hall, doesn't it?
Stairways to
heaven for train spotter
Next to the railway station of Ljubljana I discovered this special
shaped tower. Would you like to live there? Well, perhaps it is the
heaven for every train spotter?
The first poster I came across in Ljubljana
Now that's fun: After a long train trip from my native city Graz to
Ljubljana this was the first poster I came across at the underpass of
Ljubljana Railway Station: A poster promoting my city Graz!
Street tunnel in a Slovenian river valley
View from my train seat during a journey between
Zidani
Most and Ljubljana. Parts of the railway line runs through a wild
river valley with some street tunnels like this one at the other side of
the river.
Do you think the Wizard of Oz lives here?
My place at the
Slovenian train was next to this door. Generally I would say this was
the door to the driver's cabin but the atmosphere and the colours made me
think it could also the entrance to the Wizard of Oz.
Tilting Train SŽ series 310
With this tilting
train of the SŽ series 310 I enjoyed a great train ride between
Maribor and Ljubljana through a wild river valley at high speed.
'Train Art' (Blue period)
One interesting detail about Slovenian railways: Many of them are
covered with graffiti. Some of them in a very beautiful way so I'd like
to call it 'Train Art' analogous to 'Street Art'.
'Train Art' (Red period)
One interesting detail about Slovenian railways: Many of them are
covered with graffiti. Some of them in a very beautiful way so I'd like
to call it 'Train Art' analogous to 'Street Art'.
Steam locomotive
151.001
This steam locomotive presented in front of the railway station of
Maribor was originally built in Wiener Neustadt, Austria around 1900. It
was the first of several steam locos I saw at Slovenian railway
stations.
Clever pedestrian
lights
Opposite the railway station of Maribor I discovered these clever
pedestrian lights. The number above told me how many seconds I still
have to wait and later a green one told me how much time to cross the
street.
Kammerhof in Gmunden
The photo shows the Kammerhof in Gmunden which houses a museum with exhibitions
and collections of varied topics. Starting with the
exhibition about the history of the city up to a collection
of
toilet bowls.
Tile paintings in the railway station of Salzburg
The photo shows a snapshot during the construction works at the new railway
station of Salzburg. I was glad to see the tile paintings of the old
railway station will be shown in the new hall again.

Red sky over the museum of
fine arts
It was a cold afternoon in January 2005 when I walked to the
Kunsthistorische Museum in Vienna. Generally I love the art
works inside but at this certain day the best art work was
this red sky outside.
